As part of the students’ activities of the Faculty of Pharmacy and in order to connect theory with practice in many subjects, Manara University organized an academic trip for the students of Food Biochemistry Course to the Sindian Factory for Food Products. Dr. Kinda Darwish, Dean of the Faculty, and Dr. Hala Ma’arouf, the course supervisor, accompanied the students in their field trip. During the trip, the students were invited to see the major production lines in the factory and were introduced to the practical steps and procedures followed in order to get the final product, starting from choosing the raw material, passing through production stages and ending with packaging. Dr. Balsam Jraikous, the quality consultant in the factory, introduced the students to the requirements for selecting, sorting and treating raw material in order to preserve its nutritional value, and sterilizing the material in accordance with specific programs suitable for each type. The students were also introduced to the sensory, physical and chemical tests conducted on the raw material, such as moisture tests, ash test and fats test. Dr. Jraikous briefed the students on the application of food quality and safety systems in the factory that are meant to ensure a final product that is on specification of ISO and Syrian standards.
